To become a Companion member of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 35 years of age.
- to have made a contribution to the promotion of building
services.
- to be in a senior position in an enterprise related to
building services engineering.
Affiliate

To become an Affiliate member of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 23 years of age.
- to be a contributor to the art, science or practice of
building services.
- to be interested in the promotion of building services.
Student
To become a Student member of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 16 years of age.
- to be registered on a course of study in building services
engineering.
- to be working towards Licentiate, Associate or Member
status.
Licentiate (LCIBSE)
To become a Licentiate member of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 21 years of age.
- a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Building Services
Engineering, S/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
- three years or more of relevant work experience in Building
Services Engineering.
Graduate
To become a Graduate member of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 21 years of age.
- to have successfully completed an accredited BEng honours
degree or equivalent.
- Those who began their studies from September 1999 onwards
need an accredited four year MEng degree or BEng Honours
plus a further year's study.
Associate (ACIBSE)
CIBSE is now able, for the first time, to welcome competent
building services engineers as corporate (i.e. full voting)
members without demanding that they meet narrower Engineering
Council UK (ECUK) requirements at the same time. For more

For the standard route to become an Associate member of CIBSE
you need:
- to be at least 23 years of age.
- a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Building Services
Engineering (8 level H units, in subjects relevant to Engineering,
including a project), or equivalent plus Maths at N/H level
- or if you commenced first-year studies, from September
1999, the academic requirement will be a three-year degree
or HND plus additional study to degree level.
- a period of initial professional development in building
services engineering, of no less than four years duration.
- to submit an Engineering Practice Report.
- to participate in a review of your professional competence.
Member (MCIBSE)
CIBSE is now able, for the first time, to welcome competent
building services engineers as corporate (i.e. full voting)

or other engineering disciplines. Those who began the first
year of a degree in September 1999 will need to meet the
new academic requirement of an accredited four year MEng
degree or BEng (Hons) plus one further year of broadening
and deepening studies.
- a period of initial professional development in building
services engineering or normally no less than four years'
duration.
- to submit an Engineering Practice Report.
- to participate in a review of your professional competence.
Fellow (FCIBSE)
To become a Fellow of CIBSE you need:
- to be at least 35 years of age.
- to have fulfilled all the requirements for the grade of
Corporate Member of CIBSE (see Member section).
- to be eminent in building services engineering, having
held a position of superior responsibility for ten years
or more.
